Gen. Stephen Whiting, U.S. Space Command commander, gives the oath of enlistment at a community ceremony to honor high school seniors who are enlisting in the U.S. Armed Services in Colorado Springs, Colorado, May 2, 2024. Whiting commended the enlistees for continuing the legacy of the all-volunteer force, now celebrating its 50th year, and their commitment to serving a cause greater than themselves to “ensure the common defense of our great nation.” He also challenged the young men and women in attendance, stating, “our military strength comes from the trust and support placed in our junior enlisted personnel and non-commissioned officers,” emphasizing that some other countries do not empower their enlisted force like the U.S. does. Before the event, Whiting and Simmons spoke with enlistees, their families, and service recruiters, expressing gratitude for their respective roles in the enlistees decision to serve the nation. Military, civic, and industry leaders were also in attendance, offering support and resources for families and recruits. The ceremony, organized by the national non-profit Our Community Salutes with support from numerous sponsors, has been hosting similar events across the country for 15 years, providing vital support to enlistees and their families.
